  • Would you like to recycle Boma items?
  • If not, what metals are the items you would like to recycle?

Who are Boma Jewelry's recycling partners?

At Boma Jewelry, sustainability is at the core of everything we do, and we’re proud to partner with Ridwell, a company dedicated to reducing waste and recycling hard-to-recycle items. Through this partnership, we offer a responsible way to recycle old or unwanted jewelry. Instead of letting your jewelry end up in landfills, you can send it to us through Ridwell, where it will be properly recycled or repurposed.

By participating in this program, you’re helping to minimize waste and promote a circular economy. Together with Ridwell, Boma Jewelry is committed to reducing our environmental footprint and offering customers an eco-friendly option for disposing of jewelry in a sustainable way.

In our first year in partnership we received over 110 boxes of jewelry from the Seattle area, each weighing over 20 pounds. In total our team processed 1,948 pounds of jewelry or 52,894 items. We sorted the total collection into various groups including repair, renew, donation, and recycling. At the end of our process we diverted over 94.97% (50,249 items) of the collection from landfill.

From this recycling partnership, we were able to recycle 48% of the collection or 25,306 items and received hundreds of original Boma pieces as well. You can read more about how we recycle on our Sustainability Page.

What does using recycled silver mean?

At Boma Jewelry, we are deeply committed to sustainability, and a key part of that commitment is making sure no silver goes to waste. Throughout our entire production process, every bit of silver is reused. When we create new jewelry, any leftover silver scrap from the casting process is carefully collected, melted down, and repurposed into new designs. This ensures that no material is wasted, allowing us to minimize our environmental impact.

Last year alone, we recycled over 1,000 pounds of silver from our manufacturing process. To put that into perspective, that's the weight of 200 house cats or 7,000 smartphones! By reusing this silver, we reduce the need for additional mining and extraction, contributing to a more sustainable, circular economy. Watch a short video on how Boma Jewelry recycles here.

Materials + Process

What materials are used in Boma Jewelry?

At Boma Jewelry, we are dedicated to using only high-quality precious metals in all of our jewelry. The chart above highlights the four precious metals and the hallmarks associated with them. You’ll find a “925” hallmark on every piece of Boma Jewelry, which confirms that it’s made from sterling silver. Even on our gold jewelry—whether it's gold vermeil or gold-plated—you will still see the “925” hallmark, as these pieces have a thick layer of genuine gold over sterling silver.

Sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver, is both durable and beautiful, making it a perfect choice for everyday wear. Our gold vermeil jewelry offers the luxurious look of gold, without the use of base metals like zinc or brass, by layering gold over sterling silver.

By using real silver and gold, we ensure that our jewelry is not only elegant and timeless but also hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin, providing you with the highest quality and comfort.

Are the gemstones real?

Yes, at Boma Jewelry, we take pride in using genuine stones and seashells in our designs, unless otherwise specified. When you purchase a piece of Boma Jewelry, you can trust that the materials are authentic. If a piece features a non-genuine stone, we always provide clear details about the material used. For example, we may use nano gemstones, which are lab-created stones that offer the same beauty as natural gemstones but with a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach, or cubic zirconia and other alternatives. Our commitment to transparency ensures that you know exactly what you're getting with every piece of jewelry.

Is Boma Jewelry fine or costume jewelry?

Boma Jewelry is fine jewelry, not costume jewelry. Our pieces are crafted from high-quality precious metals such as 925 sterling silver and gold vermeil. Unlike costume jewelry, which is often made from inexpensive base metals like stainless steel, brass or zinc, fine jewelry like Boma’s is designed to be durable, long-lasting, and safe for sensitive skin. We focus on creating elegant and timeless pieces using real silver and gold, ensuring both beauty and quality that can be worn and cherished for years to come.

What is the difference between fine and costume jewelry?

  • Fine Jewelry: Fine jewelry is made from precious metals like gold, sterling silver, platinum, and genuine gemstones. It is designed to be durable, hold its value, and last a lifetime. Fine jewelry is often passed down through generations due to its quality and timeless appeal.
  • Costume Jewelry: Costume jewelry, on the other hand, is made from cheaper, non-precious metals like brass, zinc, or copper, and often uses imitation stones like glass or plastic. While costume jewelry is more affordable and trendy, it tends to tarnish, break easily, and is not designed to last over time. Costume jewelry is typically mass-produced and lacks the durability of fine jewelry.

At Boma, we prioritize fine craftsmanship and quality materials, ensuring that each piece is a meaningful and lasting addition to your jewelry collection.

Why is Boma so affordable for fine jewelry?

Boma Jewelry is able to offer high-quality fine jewelry at an affordable price due to our commitment to ethical, transparent, and sustainable practices that we have been building since 1981. While big brands also use sterling silver, they often have higher markups due to their luxury branding, retail costs, and large marketing budgets.

At Boma, we focus on providing exceptional value by keeping our processes streamlined. By producing our own jewelry in-house and selling directly to customers, we eliminate unnecessary middlemen, keeping our costs down without sacrificing quality. Our pieces are made from 925 sterling silver and gold vermeil, just like other luxury brands, but at a fraction of the price, making fine jewelry accessible without the luxury price tag.

Additionally, we are committed to sustainability and ethical practices, ensuring that our jewelry is not only affordable but also responsibly made. This allows you to enjoy beautiful, durable fine jewelry at a price you can feel good about.

Where and how is Boma Jewelry made?

Boma Jewelry is ethically handcrafted by artisans in Bangkok, Thailand, where we use the ancient lost wax casting process to create intricate, high-quality pieces. This traditional technique allows for precise detailing and has been perfected by our artisans, who have spent decades mastering the craft of working with sterling silver and gold.

Above you can see some of the social programs we offer for our workers. At Boma, we are committed to ethical production, providing above fair wages and a supportive environment for our artisans, who take pride in creating jewelry that is both beautiful and responsibly made.

Skin Safety

Is Boma Jewelry hypoallergenic?

Yes, all Boma Jewelry is made with high-quality, hypoallergenic sterling silver, making it safe for those with sensitive skin.

Wearing sterling silver jewelry, which is naturally hypoallergenic, is important for both comfort and health, especially for those with sensitive skin. Sterling silver is composed of 92.5% pure silver, making it a high-quality metal that is gentle on the skin. Unlike other base metals or costume jewelry made from materials like zinc, which can contain nickel or other allergens, sterling silver significantly reduces the risk of skin irritation and allergic reactions.

Base metals such as zinc are often used in inexpensive costume jewelry, but they can cause itching, redness, and even more severe reactions for those with metal sensitivities. Over time, these metals can tarnish, corrode, or even leave green marks on your skin, detracting from the beauty of your jewelry and causing discomfort.

Sterling silver, on the other hand, offers a durable, long-lasting alternative that maintains its luster with proper care. By choosing sterling silver jewelry, you not only invest in timeless, elegant pieces but also ensure that what you wear is safe and comfortable against your skin, allowing you to enjoy your accessories without worry.

Is Boma Jewelry lead-free and cadmium-free?

Yes, Boma Jewelry is both lead-free and cadmium-free. We are committed to creating safe, high-quality jewelry that meets strict safety standards. Lead and cadmium are toxic metals that can cause health issues, especially with prolonged exposure. By ensuring our jewelry is free from these harmful substances, we prioritize the health and safety of our customers, making our pieces safe to wear every day.

Is Boma Jewelry nickel-free?

Yes, all Boma Jewelry is nickel-free. We use high-quality sterling silver and gold vermeil, which are safe for sensitive skin and do not contain nickel, ensuring that our jewelry is comfortable and hypoallergenic for everyday wear.

Nickel-free jewelry is essential for ensuring that your accessories are safe and comfortable to wear, especially for those with sensitive skin. Nickel is a common allergen that can cause skin irritation, redness, itching, and even painful rashes when it comes into contact with the skin. For individuals with nickel allergies, wearing jewelry that contains nickel can lead to a condition known as allergic contact dermatitis.

By choosing nickel-free jewelry, you reduce the risk of these allergic reactions and can enjoy your jewelry without discomfort. At Boma Jewelry, we prioritize your health and well-being by offering high-quality, nickel-free pieces that are hypoallergenic and safe for daily wear. This commitment to quality means you can wear our jewelry with confidence, knowing it’s designed with your safety in mind.

Is Boma Jewelry covered by Prop 65?

Yes, Boma Jewelry complies with California's Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. Proposition 65 is a regulation that requires businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. These chemicals can be present in various products, including jewelry.

At Boma Jewelry, we are committed to ensuring that our products meet or exceed safety standards, including those outlined in Proposition 65. We carefully select our materials and work closely with our vendors and materials to ensure that our jewelry is safe for our customers. None of our products contain chemicals listed under Proposition 65 (some of which include: lead, cadmium, nickel, and arsenic).

We take your safety seriously and strive to provide transparent information about our products. If you have any further questions about Proposition 65 or our compliance, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Why does jewelry from other brands make my skin itch, but Boma Jewelry doesn't?

If you’ve experienced skin irritation or itching from other jewelry brands, you’re not alone. Many people have sensitivities to certain metals commonly used in jewelry, such as nickel. Nickel is often used in metal alloys to make jewelry more durable or to give it a certain finish, but it’s also one of the most common causes of allergic reactions in jewelry wearers.

At Boma Jewelry, we prioritize your comfort and safety by using only high-quality, hypoallergenic materials. All of our jewelry is made with 925 sterling silver, which is nickel-free and safe for sensitive skin. We also use pure metals and responsibly sourced materials, ensuring that our pieces are gentle on your skin while still being durable and beautiful.

Our commitment to using hypoallergenic materials means that you can wear Boma Jewelry with confidence, knowing that it’s crafted to minimize the risk of irritation. So if you’ve had issues with other brands, switching to Boma Jewelry could be the perfect solution to enjoy stylish, comfortable jewelry without the itch. Jewelry Care

Why is my Boma Jewelry tarnished?

Your Boma Jewelry is made with sterling silver which has been the jewelry standard since the 14th century. Sterling silver is made up of pure silver with a mix of alloys with a small amount of copper. 100% pure silver is not used for jewelry because it would be too soft and not keep its shape. It is the mixture of 92.5% silver with 7.5% alloys that allows sterling silver to offer the luster we love, with durability needed for jewelry and other household goods.

However, naturally over time any sterling silver jewelry exposed to air will tarnish. Usually it is caused by the other metals mixed with your jewelry, typically copper, that makes sterling silver tarnish. The copper reacts to moisture and sulfur in the air, causing the tarnish. Sterling silver will tarnishes faster in areas with high humidity and air pollution. Additionally, chemicals like hairspray, perfume, deodorant, body lotion, bleach, etc., can speed up the tarnishing process.

The good news is that silver can be restored to its original luster with the proper care and cleaning techniques. Read more about 925 sterling silver on our Boma Jewelry blog here.

How do I prevent tarnish?

To keep your Boma Jewelry looking as radiant as the day you bought it, proper storage and care are essential. One of the most effective ways to prevent tarnishing is by using our Anti-Tarnish Kit. This kit includes a biodegradable, air-tight plastic bag and an anti-tarnish strip, both designed to protect your jewelry from air, moisture, and other tarnish-causing elements.

Here’s how the Boma Anti-Tarnish Kit helps:

  • Air-tight Storage: The biodegradable plastic bag creates an air-tight environment, preventing exposure to oxygen and humidity, which are the main culprits behind tarnishing.
  • Anti-Tarnish Strip: The included strip absorbs moisture and chemicals in the air, ensuring your sterling silver jewelry stays polished and shiny.

For best results, place your cleaned jewelry in the air-tight bag with the anti-tarnish strip when not in use. This simple storage method is the most effective way to extend the life of your pieces and keep them tarnish-free. By taking these extra steps with our Anti-Tarnish Kit, your Boma Jewelry will maintain its beautiful luster for years to come.

Pro Tip: Always clean your jewelry before storing it to remove oils and dirt, which can accelerate tarnishing.

Boma Jewelry Jewelry Care Earring Backs

Do you sell earring backs?

Yes! Boma Jewelry offers earring backs in two high-quality options: sterling silver and stainless steel. Our sterling silver earring backs are hypoallergenic and perfect for those with sensitive skin, providing a secure and comfortable fit. For added durability, our stainless steel earring backs are corrosion-resistant and designed to last, offering a strong hold for everyday wear. Both options ensure that your earrings stay in place while matching your style preferences and skin needs.

Sterling Silver vs. Stainless Steel: What’s the Difference?

  • Sterling Silver: Made from 92.5% pure silver, sterling silver is naturally softer, which makes it ideal for those with sensitive skin. It’s hypoallergenic and gentle, reducing the risk of irritation or allergic reactions. However, because it’s softer, sterling silver can become soft and loose over time and may tarnish requiring occasional polishing to maintain its shine.
  • Stainless Steel: A harder, more durable metal that does not soften over time. Stainless steel is resistant to corrosion and tarnishing, making it a low-maintenance option. While it’s tough and long-lasting, stainless steel may not be suitable for those with sensitive skin, as it can sometimes cause irritation or allergies, especially if nickel is present in the alloy.

How do I fix bent earring posts?

Sterling silver is a relatively soft metal compared to others like gold or platinum, which makes it more prone to bending under pressure. This softness allows for intricate designs but also means that over time, through regular wear, accidental drops, or improper storage, the posts can become slightly bent. Proper care and storage can help minimize this issue.

If your sterling silver earring post is bent, you can easily fix it at home with a few simple steps. First, grab a pair of smooth-jawed pliers to avoid scratching the metal. Place the earring on a flat, stable surface, and gently grip the bent part of the post with the pliers. Slowly and carefully bend it back to its original position, applying light pressure to prevent damage. Once straightened, check the alignment, and make small adjustments if necessary. To prevent future bending, store your earrings in a jewelry box or on a padded holder. Read more on our Boma Jewelry Blog here.
